Evanstons beach scene-where to go and how to get there

The Insider’s Guide to Evanston Beaches: Where to Go, What’s Nearby & Each Beach’s Unique Vibe

Evanston may be known for its top-rated schools, historic homes, and unbeatable access to Chicago—but let’s not forget one of its crown jewels: our beaches. Few suburbs can brag about having multiple distinct lakefront spots within minutes of town, and frankly, we’re spoiled. If you’re thinking about moving to Evanston or leveling up your lifestyle here, consider this your lakefront cheat sheet.

Here’s every Evanston beach, where it lives, what it’s near, and—most importantly—the vibe.

🟦 Lighthouse Beach

📍 Location: Sheridan Rd & Central St
🌊 Nearby: Grosse Point Lighthouse, Evanston Art Center, Northwestern’s north campus

The Vibe:
Think storybook coastal calm. Lighthouse Beach feels like a quiet pocket of pure serenity—shaded paths, historic charm, and that “I could write a novel here” energy. Families love it, nature lovers worship it, and anyone wanting a peaceful morning walk will find their happy place.

Why locals love it: It’s Evanston’s most picturesque beach, with historic views and the gentlest crowds.

🟩 Clark Street Beach

📍 Location: Clark St & Sheridan Rd
🌊 Nearby: Northwestern south campus, Downtown Evanston, Centennial Park, the lagoon

The Vibe:
This is Evanston’s unofficial “social beach.” Expect volleyball nets snapping, students lounging, locals power-walking, and plenty of people-watching opportunities. It’s lively without being chaotic—Evanston’s version of beach energy with a side of good manners.

Why locals love it: You can grab coffee or lunch a 3-minute walk away. It’s a perfect add-on to any downtown day.

🟧 Lee Street Beach

📍 Location: Lee St & Lakeshore Blvd
🌊 Nearby: Main Street shopping district, Frances Willard House Museum, coffee shops galore

The Vibe:
Soft-spoken, calm, and very neighborhoody. Lee Street Beach is where people bring a book, claim a spot in the sand, and don’t move for three hours. Great for families, early-morning swimmers, and anyone who wants a low-key experience.

Why locals love it: It’s the kind of beach where the lifeguard might actually remember your name.

🟨 South Boulevard Beach

📍 Location: South Blvd & Forest Ave
🌊 Nearby: South Blvd CTA stop, Main/Dempster shopping, hip cafés and restaurants

The Vibe:
This one is quiet—as in, “am I in Evanston or a secret lakeside enclave?” It has a more eclectic, artistic feel thanks to its proximity to the Main-Dempster Mile. Lots of long-time Evanstonians prefer this beach for its chill energy.

Why locals love it: Zero pretense, very local, plenty of room to exhale.

🟥 Greenwood Street Beach

📍 Location: Greenwood St & Sheridan Rd
🌊 Nearby: Centennial Park, Clark St Boat Launch, dog beach access

The Vibe:
A family favorite with a “bring the grandparents, bring the kids” vibe. Greenwood is clean, open, and easygoing—classic Evanston residential energy. It’s a great middle ground between lively and peaceful.

Why locals love it: It’s friendly, accessible, and feels like the beach you grew up going to.

⬛ The Evanston Dog Beach (Official Name Varies by Season/Policy)

📍 Location: Near the Clark Street Boat Launch
🌊 Nearby: Northwestern, Clark Street Beach, trail access

The Vibe:
Pure chaos… but the joyful, tail-wagging kind. Depending on the season and city policy (which changes from time to time), the dog beach gives Evanston pups their own playground.

Why locals love it: Happy dogs + lakefront views = serotonin.

🟪 The Northwestern Lakefill Beaches (Technically NU Property)

📍 Location: Northwestern campus lakefill
🌊 Nearby: Norris Center, campus paths, that iconic skyline view

The Vibe:
Students, sunbathers, and photographers unite. These unofficial beachy spots along the lakefill aren’t swim beaches, but they are a major hangout scene with unbeatable skyline sunsets.

Why locals love it: Hands-down the best scenery on the whole lakefront.

Which Evanston Beach Is Right for You?

Whether you're a family looking for calm waters, a student hunting for energy, a dog parent craving chaos, or a luxury buyer scoping out lakefront neighborhoods (hello, Evanston real estate goals), there’s a beach with your name on it.

Buying near the lakefront here means walkable summers, unbeatable sunrises, and some of the North Shore’s most desirable streets. That’s part of what makes Evanston such a standout value compared to Chicago—lake access without the crowds, chaos, or condo HOA drama.

When I was growing up in Evanston the beach was just as fun and dramtic and a reality TV show!  Then I had my own kids and it was a whole day of activity that knocked the kids out for the rest of the day.  Now I love to take a chair and my book and relax while the waves lap the shore. It's like a mini vacation.  Best part...Im hom ein ten minutes!
