The Quick Version: It usually comes down to this: Do you want a "city-lite" feel with amazing food (Evanston), or a quiet, classic suburban sanctuary (Wilmette)?
The Tale of the Tape
I get asked this constantly. Both are incredible, but they feel completely different. While Wilmette prices have surged 13.6% year-over-year, Evanston remains the urban-suburban choice for walkability and CTA access.
Evanston: The Urbanist’s Dream Evanston is for people who want to walk to get their morning coffee, take the "L" into the city, and have a dozen different cuisines within four blocks. It’s vibrant and a bit artsy. Plus, with a median price of $476,000, it’s a lot more accessible for first-time buyers or those looking for that collegiate energy near Northwestern.
Wilmette: The Quiet Powerhouse Wilmette is where you go for a little more "elbow room." It’s quieter, the lots are generally bigger, and it’s anchored by that classic North Shore prestige. You’re looking at a much higher entry point—median prices are hitting $1.25 million this year—but you're buying into one of the most stable luxury markets in the country.
My Take: If you want a backyard you can get lost in, go Wilmette. If you want to walk to a jazz club and a world-class bakery, Evanston is your spot. Plus Im a townie. Been here since I was 5 years old and love it down!
